For the pastcouple ofhundred years, weve been filling the atmosphere with carbon dioxide. How did we do that? By burningfossil fuels that werelockedaway ascarbon belowthe Earths surfacefor a very very long time. So, now we have to put all that carbon back, orrisk theconsequencesof a warming climate. But how do we do that? One idea is to get rid of it by filling it intoold oil and gas fields. Another is to dump it at the bottom of the sea,so it will be gone for ever. How long will it stay there? We donthaveany idea. Meanwhile,we have to protect natural, long-lasting stores of carbonlike forests andpeat bogsand so on, andstart making energy in a way that doesnt put more carbon into the atmosphere.
