Why Cats and Dogs Fight

Long ago, Cat and Dog were friends. They played together.  They atetogether.  They even slept near oneanother.

Yes,Cat and Dog got along very well!  Thereason was simple.  All the other animalshad to work for humans.  But because Catwas so clean, it did not have to work. And because Dog was so loyal, it did not have to work either.  Cat and Dog were the only animals who hadtime to play.  They enjoyed themselvesvery much.

Everythingwas too good to be true!  Cat and Dogwanted to make sure their lives stayed easy. They asked the old man and the woman who owned them to sign a papersaying they would never have to work. That way, they would have proof that they could spend their lives atplay. The oldman and woman signed the paper.  Then Dogburied it in the ground with his bones. After their master died, the other animals grew more and more jealous.

“Thepeople aren’t here any more to protect them. Why should they get off so easy?” Ox asked Cow.

“You are right,”said Cow.  “let’s find that paper anddestroy it.  Then there will be no proofthat Cat and Dog can play.  They willhave to work like we do.”

Ox and Cowlooked everywhere, but they could not find the paper.  Finally, they asked Rat to help.  Rat sniffed and sniffed.  At last, he smelled the paper.  He pulled it from the ground and gave it toOx.  Ox ground it under his hoof and destroyedit.  Then Dog had to go to work ashunter.  Cat had to catch mice.  Cat never forgave Dog for burying the paperin a spot Rat could find.  To this day, that’s why cats and dogs fight.
