Mr Smith works in a middle school. He teaches English. His wife was born in a rich family and stays at home. She doesn't want to find a job and never does any housework. Their son, Bill, is ten years old but the boy likes nothing but playing. So he isn't good at his lessons. He can’t do his homework and often asks his mother to help him. But the woman can't do it, either. She asks her husband to do all the homework for Bill every day. The woman says she will do some housework if he helps their son.
It was Saturday yesterday. Mr Smith didn't go to work. But he had to get up early. There were a lot of clothes to wash. He hates to do washing. So he asked,“Do you have any homework to do,Bill?”
“No,I don’t. ”
“Bad luck!” said Mr Smith. “I have to wash clothes today. ”
A man is travelling in the desert and he loses his way. He has no water to drink and
thinks he will die. After walking for two days, he finds an old wooden house. He enters the house, and finds a water pump (栗).He is very excited, and goes to pump some water, but no water comes out. He loses heart, and sits on the ground. Then he sees a bottle near the water pump. It is full of water and there is a note on it. It says,“You must put the water into the water pump to get water out of it. Don’t forget to fill this bottle when you leave. ’’
He looks at the bottle of water, and can’t decide (决定)what to do. If he drinks the water, he may be able to survive (生存)in the desert for a while, but if he puts the water into the water pump, he may get enough water to help him get out of the desert, or may get nothing. Finally, he puts the whole bottle of water into the water pump. He again tries to pump water out, and this time plenty of water comes out. He drinks as much as he can, and fills the bottle with water again. A few days later, he walks out of the desert.
Dear readers,
I know that Abraham Lincoln (阿伯拉罕.林肯)was the tallest American President. He stood six feet four inches tall. I also know that he was the first. President in the White House to wear a beard (胡须)and that he was the first one to appear on a coin. Now, after reading Laugh with Lincoln in this month’s magazine, I’ve also learned that this
president may have had the strongest funny bone!
In all the pictures of Lincoln Pve seen, his face always looked very serious. In fact, he had many important responsibilities, and he had to make many hard decisions. But people have studied his life say that Lincoln often laughed and joked.
He used humour (幽默)to help people think about the thing in a new and better way. He understood that sharing laughter could help us connect and become friends. I am sure his sense of humour was one of the reasons that made him a great president—and a loving father and husband I’m glad that I know a little more about the sixteenth president of the United States. And I think I Ml find a good joke to tell on Presidents’ Day- If you know a funny one, I hope you’ll send it to me!
Happy ending
Your friend, Christine
