Jimmy is an automotive mechanic (修理工), but he lost his job a few months ago. He has a good heart, but always fears applying for a new job.
One day, he gathered up all his courage and decided to attend a job interview. His appointment was at 10:00 a.m. and it was already 8:30 a.m. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man kicking the tyre of his car angrily. Obviously, there was something wrong with the car. Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand. When Jimmy finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him, for he just helped someone in need, and he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said, “Well, I could take you to the office for your interview. It's the least I could do. Please, I insist.” Jimmy agreed.
Upon arrival, Jimmy found a long line of applicants waiting to be interviewed. Jimmy still had some grease on him after the car repair, but he did not have much time to wash it off or change his shirt. One by one, the applicants left the interviewer's office with disappointed looks on their faces. Finally, his name was called. The interviewer was sitting on a large chair facing the office window. Rocking the chair back and forth, he asked, “Do you really need to be interviewed?” Jimmy's heart sank. “With the way I look now, how could I possibly pass this interview?” he thought to himself.
Then the interviewer turned the chair and to Jimmy's surprise, it was the old man he helped earlier in the morning. It turned out that he was the general manager of the company.
The old man said,“Sorry I had to keep you waiting, but I was pretty sure I made the right decision to have you as part of our workforce even before you stepped into this office. I just know you will be a trustworthy worker. Congratulations!” Jimmy sat down and they drank a cup of well-deserved coffee together to celebrate his landing himself a new job.
When we talk about intelligence (智力), we do not mean the ability to get good scores on certain kinds of tests or even the ability to do well in school.By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving (表现), especially in a new situation. If we want to test intelligence, we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows what to do.
For example, when in a new situation, an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him.He tries to find out all be can, and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it.He probably isn't sure how it will all work out, but at least he tries. And if he cannot make things work out right, he doesn't feel ashamed (羞愧) that he failed, he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook (看法) on life, a special feeling about life, and how he fits into it.
If you look at children, you'll see great difference between what we call “bright” children and “non-bright” children. They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amount of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out about life-he tries to get in touch with everything around him.But the unintelligent child keeps more to himself and his own dream-world:he seems to have a wall between him and life in general.
A dinner party is often a pleasant time for everyone but the host, so the important point to keep in mind is that “planning” is a key part of a successful dinner party. All too often, hosts make the mistake of overexerting(用力过度) themselves, leaving little time to enjoy the dinner party themselves. The following information can help you make it an enjoyable night for both yourself and your guests.
Firstly, make a guest list so you'll know how many people to cook for. Let your guests know the time and date of the dinner party well in advance and be sure to remind them shortly before the dinner party.
Make a checklist of ingredients and drinks that you'll need and try to buy them a couple of days before the dinner party. Get the house in order the day before the dinner party. If you leave your house to be cleaned till the dinner party day, you might find yourself more stressed than you need to be. Besides, keeping the menu simple doesn't mean it has to be boring. The night will also be a lot easier for you if you prepare dishes that can be laid out in the center of the table, allowing quests to serve themselves.
You can provide some music and the type of music will depend on the type of guests. You might not think of it, but the night will run a lot more smoothly with background music for the dinner party.
