Filmmaker Gordon Quinn has this discussion withsubjects (characters) in his film:We say to our subjects, “We are not journalists; we are going to spend years with you. Our code of ethics is very different. A journalist wouldn’t show you the footage. We will show the film before it is finished. I want you to sign the release (GIVInG THE FILMMAKER EDITORIAL COnTROL), but we will really listen to you. But ultimately it has to be our decision.”Is this conversation suitable or appropriate for China?
Yes, it is suitable. I think most subjects would understand why the release and the filmmakers independence areneeded.

We have all had the experience of having an outsider represent people from our group-- be it our age group, gender, nationality or something else. Sometimes it feels ok. Sometimes it doesnt. The following series of photos are of people representing some aspect of someone elses culture or identity. After each photo you will be asked to say how you personally feel about the representation. Whats ok? Whatsnot ok? Why?
