In addition to this direct impact, there may also be broader consequences for society as a whole, experienced either by the unemployed or by those in work or even those not in the labour market. If crime levels increase as a result of unemployment, for example, all households and all sectors may potentially be affected, whether as the victims of crime or through the additional costs of policing, crime prevention and the prison system. Some social consequences may carry financial costs, even if these are not directly and readily measurable, as in the example just cited, while others may have no attached costs.
