The Hunchback of Notre Dame - by Victor Hugo

Notre Dame de Paris is a tragedy in which good innocent people are destroyed and persecuted under the autocratic system. The heroine Esmeralda is a kind and pure girl. She is compassionate and dares to sacrifice herself to save others. Hugo put such a bright image on the gloomy and dark background of the middle ages, describing how the society ruled by absolutism and rampant church power threatened and persecuted her like a huge snare, and killed her with frightening means. Notre Dame de Paris is the first large-scale romantic novel by the French writer Victor Hugo. Rich imagination, grotesque plot and peculiar structure have become the important features of this novel. The author makes full use of romantic techniques to describe the comparison between good and evil, beauty and ugliness, and exaggerates some characteristics in the arrangement of environment, events, plot and the shaping of characters, resulting in a strong comparison.
