:III.Read the passage and finish the corresponding questions. (30%)

: A I hold that cricket is boring. Typically, the matches between two teams last at least six hours or more each day. And there are usually formal intervals on each day for lunch and tea with brief informal breaks for drinks. So, if a sport lasts for so long that you need a washroom break, it is not a sport at all, but only a means of passing the time, like reading. Nobody is quite sure how cricket began, though people believe it was invented by shepherds who used their crooks to protect the small gate to the sheep fold. This saying is certainly reasonable because shepherds had to stay outdoors for long hours, without much to do. The first written reference to cricket was in 1300, when Prince Edward played it with his friend. For in those days, princes had few fish to fry. Cricket was spread around the world by British soldiers, who often had to stay in some places not just for an hour but for long and boring weeks. Of course, they needed something to amuse themselves. Today Australia is most powerful in the game, and its people are good at it. They have devoted themselves to it. The only way for other countries to beat them may be to round up the unemployed and the wasters and give them all bats. Certainly, they’d feel as at home in the stand as sitting in a bus shelter all day. Playing cricket is something like doing a jigsaw, which I once explained to a Greek. “Yes, you spend a couple of weeks putting all the pieces together, so you end up with a picture.” “Then what happens?” He asked. “Well, you break it up again and put it back in the box.” Jigsaw and cricket, both are not really games themselves. They are simply tools for wasting time. And that’s not something that sits well in the modern world. We may dream of living the slow life, taking a couple of hours over lunch and eating Cheese until dawn, but the reality is that we would have a heart attack if the traffic lights stay red for too long or the lift doors fail to close when we are ready to go. Then cricket is the thing that should have belonged to an ancient age when people invested money in time rather than in things. They need it to kill the time. But now we have so many things to deal with, it seems odd to watch somebody else playing the complicated game of catch for a whole day. Please stop watching – then it will go away.

: B Most Americans are very conscious of their health and try to maintain a nutritious diet and daily routines to maintain good health. Yet, for many years the tobacco and liquor industries have tried to project the image of style and fashion for those who use their products. Most have learned, however, that the dangers caused to health by tobacco and alcohol can no longer be denied or ignored. The campaigns to alert the public to the evils of these two social drugs have been intense and effective. However, most people dislike being warned that they shouldnt do something. It is a kind of psychological resistance. Yet, all tobacco and liquor products must now contain a warning on the package. The warning is simple, but the message is clear: smoking and drinking are hazardous to health. The wording may vary, but it is phrased in such a way as to draw the attention of the consumer to the danger. On TV all tobacco advertising is legally banned, and every ad in a magazine must display the warning. There are many public notices on trains and buses giving out the warning that smoking is linked to lung cancer and other lung and heart diseases. The warning against alcohol consumption is of a different kind. It goes out especially to women who are pregnant and anyone operating a car or electrical machinery. A pregnant woman can cause damage to her baby by drinking alcohol. Also anyone operating a machine runs the risk of an accident which could be fatal. Such warnings appear on all wine bottles and even an apparently harmless can of beer.
